You Are Made To Be Victorious
Here is a list of the kings of the land that Joshua and the Israelites conquered. Thirty one kings in all (Joshua 12:7,24)
When I read in Joshua 12 this week, I wasn’t exactly sure if there would be any kind of lesson in this considering this chapter is a list of defeated kings. But there is actually a great lesson here among these verses and all of the kings defeated. These are a list of victories!
These two verses tell us that Joshua removed all the major military threats to Israel’s occupation of the land. Joshua achieved the task God called him to do securing the nation’s future. However there was more to be done. Each tribe was now responsible for their own area and it was up to them to fully possess the land allotted to them.
In the Book of Joshua a whole generation of Israel died wishing. For them, 40 years of wandering in the dessert turned the Promised Land into a fantasy. During those same 40 years, Joshua nurtured a victory just waiting to happen.
I don’t know about you, but with my experience with anxiety, as well as some of the things that I have been through in my life, I have always found it to be therapeutic to list my victories and blessings because it puts my problems into perspective and it is also a reminder of God’s past faithfulness. This is also a great reminder that God will defeat anything that comes against me that isn’t according to His will. I just only need to be obedient to Him.
As I read in Joshua this week, I kept thinking about why Joshua succeeded when others did not? I believe that the reasons reside in Joshua’s own heart. That is the difference between what happens for some people and what doesn’t happen for others. Success lies in ourselves and God’s word, not in our circumstances!
God wants all his children to live a victorious life, however, this is only possible through the walk of faith. This walk of faith is what brings victory. Faith is what enables us to overcome all the trials, adversities and circumstances of this world (1 John 5:4). To live in victory you must think victorious! It is impossible to live in victory without a thinking victoriously.
But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 15:57)
Likewise, Jesus through his death and resurrection, conquered our major threat, which would be Satan. Now it is up to us to enforce God’s victory in our lives. However we are often like the Israelites and allow wrong attitudes to remain in our lives. These wrong attitudes grow if we are not convinced the Bible is true, if we aren’t sure of God’s love for us, and if we don’t believe that God has the final say in this world.
