Tips For Creating A Daily Bible Reading Plan & Routine

Spending time in God’s word is of the utmost importance as a Christian. If you are struggling to be consistent, or finding motivation to be in His word, then this post is just for you!

The last year has been a journey for me filled with struggles, fear, and doubt. It hasn’t been easy, but through it all I have learned to rely on God even more.

This year I’ve been trying to heal from hurt from a loved one and overcome anxiety.

But I do have a confession to make. Up until a couple of months ago, I did not have a consistent prayer time or Bible reading routine. I mean I would go in streaks where there would be a couple of months when I would be consistent, but then I would fall back on my routine and just read the bible or spend time with God when I felt like it. But with my struggles I have become more consistent and better about spending time with God, because……………………….well…………………..I NEED HIM!

Through this journey God never left me. He has been teaching me what it means to fully surrender and trust Him wholeheartedly.

Jesus meets us in our messy moments. He is enough, He is all we need.

But even though He is enough, we are still called to pursue Him through His word.

I’ve been reading through the Bible with a Good Morning Girls group on Facebook. It has helped me become more accountable and consistent.

God has been opening my eyes a lot more lately to the importance of pursuing knowledge, insight, and wisdom in the word of God.

“For my people are foolish; they know me not; they are stupid children; they have no understanding. They are wise in doing evil! But how to do good they know not.”   (Jeremiah 4:22)

The only place we can know God and know the works He has for us is through prayer and Bible study. We all experience seasons when we don’t feel like opening His word and spending time with Him, but we must always fight for our time with Him.

We must continually be growing in our knowledge of God so that through prayer way may gain insight and wisdom.

I believe 100% that the best way to be consistent in spending regular time with God is to create a daily Bible reading plan and prayer routine. But how that happens and for how long on any given day is up to you and God.

What I mean when I say a daily Bible reading plan and prayer routine is that when you meet with God, you walk through the same steps each day and using the same methods in your routine.

When I sit down with my Bible and prayer journal I like to get right down to business. I don’t want to be wondering what I’m supposed to be reading, if I’m forgetting to pray for someone specific, or forgetting to praise Him. I want my time with the Lord to be efficient, effective, and also transform me. So developing and having a daily Bible reading plan and prayer routine has helped me tremendously in this area!

God is waiting for us to turn our attention and our hearts to him wholeheartedly. So, today I am going to share with you my daily Bible reading plan and prayer routine. Perhaps, you’ll adopt my tips & strategies, or perhaps you will use it as a guide to creating your own Bible and prayer routine. My new routine is inspired by “The Hour That Changes The World” by Dick Eastman. I haven’t read the full book as of yet, but I downloaded the PDF version.

I am a list maker, goal setter, and I believe in writing out a plan because it helps you to see it in writing so you can better put your plan into action! So, please take some time today to write out your routine so you can refer to it daily to make getting into God’s word more efficient and effective, and maybe even transform you.

1. Praise & Worship

I always, always start my time with praise & worship. This means I use my Spotify app on my Kindle and listen to some worship music that I have on my playlist.

I choose music that helps me turn my mind to Christ. The point of this time is to focus my heart to Him and away from distractions.

I usually will listen to one song, then after that I sit in silence worshipping & praising Him, and also listening for God’s voice.

Here are 7 of my favorite praise and worship songs that are currently on my Spotify app right now.

  1. Word of God Speak by Mercy Me
  2. The Well by Casting Crowns
  3. Good, Good Father by Chris Tomlin
  4. Your Promises by Elevation Worship
  5. Oceans by Hillsong United
  6. Hungry (Falling On My Knees by Joy Williams
  7. What A Savior by Laura Story

2. Petition

After spending time in worship, I am ready to pray for myself and my personal needs. I pray for my situation, emotions, needs and desires before God. During this time I also confess my sins.

3. Intercessory Prayer

During this time I pray for others and concentrate on the needs of others. I don’t pray for every single person or thing on my list. There are certain days I pray for certain people or events.

4. Bible Study

Then I move into Bible Study. This is where having a reading plan comes in handy. There are a variety of options for this part of your Bible and prayer routine. There are lots of options available, just find the one that is right for you. But, having a plan to follow will keep you motivated and consistent with your time in the Word.

5. Gratitude & Praise

I then finally move into gratitude & praise. This is just simply a time of rejoicing in His abundant mercy and grace.

This simple routine has truly helped me to be more efficient & effective with my quiet time. I know that when I sit down I’m meeting with God, and I look forward to this time because I know what to expect and this new routine has really and truly transformed me, and my relationship with God.
