There is Evil, But There Is Also Good

Bastille Day attack in Nice France, Wurzburg train attack in Germany, mass shootings in Baltimore, MD, Alabama, Texas, and Louisiana, Priest killed in France. Doesn’t it feel like like there is more evil in the world today? The examples that I listed all happened in the month of July, but there are so many more that have happened months before. It seems like everytime I turn on the TV to watch the news, there is another mass shooting or terrorist attack.

My husband is a news junkie (we watch a lot of Fox News & CNN). I enjoy watching the news, to a point, but sometimes the stories, the true nightmares of the times we currently live in makes me terrified. They make me sick to my stomach. I don’t know know about you, but when these horrible tragedies happen, I have a habit of gluing myself to my TV and focusing on the bad & evil of it all. Sometimes it even angers me or makes me feel anxious. But I know that isn’t how God wants us to respond. I think the best and only way to respond is to fall on your knees and just pray. Pray for our country, our world, the people that committed these horrible acts of violence, the victims, and everyone involved.

What do you choose to focus on? The evil or the good? In the face of evil and tragedy, instead of gluing ourselves to our TV or computer screen, we can choose to turn off the news. We can stop reading all those articles that infuriate us or make us fearful. We can stop worrying and freaking out about the terrible world we live in. We can stop focusing on the evil in this world and start focusing on the truth we should be holding near and dear to our hearts. The truth is that love wins and God is still in charge (Daniel 4:17)

Yes, There is evil in our neighborhoods, in our churches, the schools our children attend,  our colleges & universities, our workplaces, there is evil every single place we go and even on the other side of the world. There will always be evil. “For we all fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).

But the good news is there is also good everywhere. The world is a beautiful, amazing place filled with good people who are doing great things. There is good in our neighborhoods, in our churches, the schools our children attend, our colleges & universities, our workplaces, there is good every single place we go, and even on the other side of the world. There will always be good because God, our Creator, is good.

We can choose to fight back not with fear, anger, and rage, but with love, good, hope, and peace. We can choose not to be overcome by the evil that is in the world, but instead to overcome and conquer the evil that is around us with good. We can choose to love our enemies, bless those that curse us, and pray for those that mistreat us. (Luke 6:27-28).

God also calls us to pray for our enemies.

“But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collector doing that? And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” (Matthew 5:44-48)

I do not have the answers for how to overcome the evil terrorists that are destroying lives every single day, or how to protect ourselves from the gunmen and bombers who seek to attack us in our homes, schools, churches, and theaters. Sometimes I wonder if there is anything I can do to fix the injustices of this world. But the answer starts right were I am, right where you are. Neither you nor I may not have a powerful influence or even all the answers. But the best thing we can do is just pray,

There is a lot of fear in the world today.

Evil seems to be everywhere.

But I choose to be the good that will overcome the evil.

Yes, evil seems to be everywhere, but remember:

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

    Hi Valerie,
I am choosing to be the good right along side you because you are right, love does win. Light pierces the darkness. Light erases darkness. It always wins! Thank you so much for coming alongside me this week to share hope at #MomentsofHope! I look forward to reading more of your work!

    Blessings and smiles,
