Winter Wellness: Stomach Flu Prevention Right From Your Own Kitchen

A stomach virus has hit our house this week, and I am the latest victim! I have been using some great natural home remedies, and I am on the mend and starting to feel better. But in the midst of this lovely virus, I was hit with this amazing thought for a new series that we will be doing here at The Kitchen Revival for the remainder of the winter months and cold & flu season.

It just seems that cold & flu season has gone wild this year and just seems worse than normal. So, for the remainder of winter and cold and flu season I will be running a series that will be posted every Thursday called Winter Wellness. This series will have natural tips and remedies for everything that ales you during the winter months.

So, since we have been dealing with the flu at our house, I thought we could start with stomach flu prevention.

As Hippocrates said “Let Thy Food Be Thy Medicine!” I believe that the best medicine can be found right in your own kitchen. Over the years I have started to rely more on natural remedies instead of a doctor’s office.

Here are some natural remedies to help prevent you from becoming the latest victim of the stomach flu.

Apple Cider Vinegar – Apple Cider Vinegar is great for lots of other health reasons. ACV helps to keep your stomach and intestines in a alkaline state. Of course, drinking straight up Apple Cider Vinegar isn’t very pleasing, so what we do at our house is we mix it with juice or water to make it more pleasing to the palate!

Bone Broth – I have heard lots of wonderful things about bone broth, but we haven’t tried making any homemade bone broth at our house as of yet, but I have a feeling that we will be trying it very soon. The minerals in bone broth will help keep your immune system strong and helps your body fight off any exposure.

Probiotics – You can get your daily dose of probiotics through probiotic rich foods or a good quality daily probiotic supplement. Due to food allergies I take a daily probiotic supplement. Having the right balance of healthy bacteria in the intestines can help to overpower and fight off any kind of virus/bug. Probiotics are also great to use after the stomach bug because it will help restore your depleted intestinal tract.

Essential Oils – Our family started using essential oils last summer and we are still learning about all the benefits of the different essential oils. My favorite essential oil that I currently use on a regular basis is lemon essential oil because it helps build your immunity.

Garlic – Eating raw garlic has lots of health benefits. Garlic is anti-viral and helps boost the immune system and fights infections. But if you prefer not to eat raw garlic you can always purchase odorless garlic capsules.

Oregano – This spice has the highest antioxidant. Oregano is a known bacterial killer and anti-inflammatory. This spice also helps with fending off the stomach flu and keeps harmful bacteria from developing and multiplying.

Do you have any natural remedies that you use for flu prevention? Please post them in the comments below.

This is really interesting. I haven’t had a stomach bug in years and never had the flu (knock on wood), but working with kids I fear that day will come soon haha. Good stuff to know just in case!

This is all really good information, and I look forward to more ideas to treat illnesses with good food.
